Sick day rules are discussed, including advice for patients with diabetes during an acute illness, when eating and drinking may become a problem. Topics covered are: glucose and  ketone testing, precautions to take when ill, insulin adjustment, nausea and diarrhoea, eating and dietary adjustments, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), treatment with steroids.

Podcast starts with a lengthy disclaimer, as people with diabetes are even more vulnerable during the acute illness, and if unable to eat or drink, are at a high risk of acute decompensation of their diabetes. This can lead to potentially life threatening dehydration, hospital admission etc. Thus this video should be used for advice only, and is NOT substitute for access to medical care and advice during the acute illness. If unwell and can not control your diabetes please contact your health care provider, or go to ER or AE ( emergency department).
